Math and Mushrooms 2024

BARC

We have an autumn tradition here at BARC and that is to go foraging for mushrooms.

Mikkel Thorup, PI for BARC and an avid mushroom hunter, always tells his students that outdoors is often where he gets the best ideas for research and sees things clearly, and thus often invites his students to go for a walk in the nearby Fælledparken, a large park right next to the Department of Computer Science at UCPH.

This year, Associate Professor Mikkel Vind Abrahamsen and his PhD student Jack Stade were the ones to take initiative and invite the rest of BARC to join them for an afternoon in the forests of Northern Seeland (Nordsjælland) for a talk about math whilst looking for mushrooms. On Friday, October 4, bags were filled with mushrooms of every kind from the bountiful forest floor on a sunny autumn day. Not all were edible but thankfully both Mikkel T. and Mikkel A. as well as Jack really know their mushrooms and could guide the rest of the group to a fun and delicious experience.
