BARC core researcher co-authors recommendations on AI
Thore Husfeldt co-authors recommendations on AI and theoretical computer science.
In September, BARC core researcher Thore Husfeldt joined a group of theoretical computer scientists from academia and industry at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing in Berkeley, California, to work out how the research community should respond to the growing power and influence of AI. Through a series of facilitated small- and large-group discussions, the group agreed on twelve concrete near-term actions, covering topics such as disclosure of AI use, the evaluation of conference submissions, and the role of AI in graduate education.
The working group's report, "AI and TCS: The Next Six Months," was released on 28 September and is available on the working group's webpage, where actions taken in the coming months will also be tracked.
"It is important that BARC continues to take responsibility in this process," says Professor Thore Husfeldt, who also chairs the steering committee of ICALP, the flagship conference of the European Association for Theoretical Computer Science. "Theoretical computer science is a broad field. Algorithms and computational complexity, which is at the heart of BARC's activities, is one part of it, but the European tradition going back to Gödel and Turing also includes logic, semantics, and automata theory. These communities share the same publication culture, standards, and norms, so the response to AI has to be something the whole field works out together."
