Expanders Learning Seminar

We are happy to announce the start of an Expanders Learning Seminar, that will run as a collaborative event between the Mathematics Department (the Operator Algebras/Functional Analysis group) and the Computer Science Department (the BARC group), over the course of Bloks 1 and 2.

The meetings in Blok 1 take place on Wednesdays, 9:15-11am, at the following dates:

September 11, September 18, September 25, October 9 and October 23, 2019.

The first meeting (on September 11), toke place in the Lunch room of the BARC group (room 03-0-08 DIKU). There is a very nice coffee machine to which everybody is welcome. (Please, arrive a bit early if you wish to get a coffee before the lecture.)

There will soon be a homepage with more detailed information on the topics to be covered in the Seminar, as well as references/lecture notes for the lectures. Most lectures in Blok 1 will be delivered by Peter M. R. Rasmussen (BARC).

Note: After a careful introduction to the general theory of spectral expander graphs, we plan to cover both the method of Reingold-Vadhan-Wigderson for constructing expanders using zig-zag product of graphs, and Margulis' method, using box spaces of Property (T) residually finite infinite groups (such as SL_n(Z), n\geq 3). And more...

Applications to both computer science and operator algebras (incl. coarse geometry) will also be discussed.

Please, feel free to advertise this seminar to all interested people.
